Vraag:The Second Vatican Council talks about the relationship between the Church and the modern world. How can we reconcile the Church and the reality that is already beyond the modern? How do we find God’s voice while loving our time?

Antwoord: I wouldn’t know how to answer that theoretically, but I certainly know that the Council is still being applied. It takes a century for a Council to be assimilated, they say. And I know the resistance to its decrees is terrible. There is incredible support for restorationism, what I call “indietrismo” (backwardness), as the Letter to the Hebrews (10:39) says: “But we do not belong to those who shrink back.” The flow of history and grace goes from the roots upward like the sap of a tree that bears fruit. But without this flow you remain a mummy. Going backwards does not preserve life, ever. You must change, as St. Vincent of Lérins wrote in his Commonitory when he remarked that even the dogma of the Christian religion progresses, consolidating over the years, developing with time, deepening with age. But this is a change from the bottom up. The danger today is indietrismo, the reaction against the modern. It is a nostalgic disease. This is why I decided that now the permission to celebrate according to the Roman Missal of 1962 is mandatory for all newly consecrated priests. After all the necessary consultations, I decided this because I saw that the good pastoral measures put in place by John Paul II and Benedict XVI were being used in an ideological way, to go backward. It was necessary to stop this indietrismo, which was not in the pastoral vision of my predecessors.

Vraag: Wat weerhoudt de Kerk ervan om vrouwen in meer posities te betrekken binnen kerkelijke structuren?

Antwoord: "De toegang tot het diakenambt voor vrouwen is iets dat op dit ogenblik open ligt. De paus heeft hiervoor een commissie opgericht, en dat is een goede zaak. Theologisch gezien zijn er geen tegenindicaties voor, en er zijn ook veel pastorale argumenten. Vrouwelijke diaconessen hebben vroeger ook in de Kerk bestaan, maar door de patriarchale structuur van de Kerk en de samenleving is het verdwenen."

Vraag: Toch voelen veel vrouwen een drempel aan. 

Antwoord: We komen uit een patriarchale cultuur, waarin de vrouw ondergeschikt was aan de man. Niet alleen in de Kerk, maar ook op cultureel en politiek niveau moeten er nog veel stappen gezet worden om uit die patriarchale structuur te komen. Er mag geen plaats zijn voor discriminatie.”

Vraag: Wat is uw advies voor jongeren die hun hoop verliezen?

“Die vraag is zo oud als het geloof zelf, en ik heb daar geen antwoord op. Tijdens mijn chemobehandeling ontmoette ik een vrouw in de wachtzaal van het ziekenhuis. Ze zag mijn priesterboord en vroeg of ik pastoor was. ‘Ik zou graag gelovig zijn zoals u. Dan zou alles veel minder moeilijk zijn’, zei ze. Ik vertelde haar dat ik dat nog niet zo zeker wist. Het geloof kan een steun zijn in het leven, maar dat betekent niet dat leven makkelijker is. Het geloof geeft ons geen pasklare antwoorden op problemen. Het is niet omdat we geloven dat we geen vragen meer hebben. Het is belangrijk dat jongeren beseffen dat er uitdagingen zijn. Er zijn mensen die zich daar niets van aantrekken en zich geen vragen stellen. Dat is veel erger. Als jongeren vragen stellen, toont dat hun menselijke kwaliteiten.”
